I won’t really know until the end, when the first draft is done and I can read the alternating chapters of Audrey Liza and The Last Orchard in sequence, how much background information on the page is too much for this particular work. How much is necessary for the narrative? How much is intrinsically worthwhile?
I’ve got a piece coming out on Medium this week about the experience of researching these ‘Tassie Tales’.
I think it depends on what you go into detail about, and apples was great. I recall Cormac McCarthy going into detail about … what was it? Baiting a trap? So I liked the description of the orchard and the info about apples.
