I was feeling punk when I was there, but I still got out and about. I remember the orchid garden. I found it interesting to see the advantage of unitary power if it's in the hands of a talented administrator who would be ashamed to behave badly. It didn't feel rigid to me, but I knew not to spit in public. Good manners aren't just a suggestion, they are the price of admission. As I recall Singapore has had good executives, which is not surprising given that it was British until about 60 years ago. It's like Hong Kong or Switzerland as a place where the rich can put their wealth. Such a great city, and some exquisitely

beautiful people.
