Online publishing offers authors so many creative opportunities, doesn't it? It's difficult to know sometimes which choices are immersive and which are just distractions, pulling readers out of the text rather than drawing them into it.
I tend to avoid 'narrative' illustrations for that reason: I don't want to replace the reader's visual imagination with my own. But sometimes, as here, I get carried away.
